Gender Equality aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. It recognises that gender inequality remains a significant barrier to sustainable development. The goal focuses on eliminating all forms of discrimination, violence, and harmful practices against women and girls.

It calls for the full and equal participation of women and girls in all spheres of life, including in decision-making processes and leadership roles. Goal 5 emphasises the importance of ensuring women's rights to sexual and reproductive health, access to education, economic opportunities, and ownership of land and other resources. It also seeks to challenge and change harmful gender norms and stereotypes that perpetuate inequality. The goal highlights the need to provide equal opportunities for girls to access quality education and acquire the skills necessary for employment and entrepreneurship.

Additionally, Goal 5 promotes the provision of social protection policies and services that address the specific needs and vulnerabilities of women and girls. By achieving this goal, societies can foster inclusive and equitable development, break the cycle of poverty, and create a more just and sustainable world for all.
